Punjab government’s allocation of Rs 5 billion for sports in 2016-17 budget is definitely a positive sign for the sports future of Punjab Province. The sports infrastructure in rest of the country will also take benefit from the positive measures taken by the Punjab government.
In the previous year, Rs 1.5 billion budget was allocated for sports and Rs 1 billion for youth affairs and now it has been doubled for the next fiscal year. Out of Rs 5 billion, a hefty amount of Rs 2.9 billion has been allocated for under construction sports schemes while Rs 2.1 will be spent on new sports projects across the province.
It is pertinent to mention here that former Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar, who completed a number of sports projects in Punjab province during the las four years, had planned several more for the bright future of sports but his removal from the post stalled all the planning.
The projects of swimming pool, squash court, boxing complex in Nishtar Park Sports Complex and tartan track at Punjab Stadium were near completion under the supervision of Usman Anwar.
In the new fiscal year, Punjab government is expected the complete the above-mentioned sports venues.
It is to be noted here that the meritorious work rendered by the former DG SBP Usman Anwar has a key role in the expansion of sports budget of Punjab province. Usman Anwar initiated several sports projects such as playfields in all major districts of Punjab, construction of sports gymnasiums, dozens of e-libraries, 1000 sports grounds in the province including 150 alone in Lahore and now Punjab government had to double its sports budget to complete the above-mentioned projects.
It’s interesting to note that majority of the under-construction and future sports projects and targets mentioned in the Punjab sports budget speech, have been initiated or planned by former DG Sports Punjab.
