President Mamnoon Hussain on Friday telephoned ailing Olympian and World Cup 1994 winning team’s member Mansoor Ahmed and promised all possible financial support to him for his treatment.
Olympian Mansoor is suffering from heart disorder and expected to undergo surgery next week.
“I am thankful to president who telephoned me personally and offered all kind of assistance and help for my treatment,” Mansoor said.
President Mamnoon kept talking to Mansoor for about four minutes, “He was very gracious and also prayed for my speedy recovery, he hoped that my surgery that now also required a pacer installment near the heart would be successful.”
Meanwhile the ministry of inter-provincial coordination (IPC) has released Rs 500, 000 for Mansoor’s treatment and rehabilitation.
On the special instruction of minister of IPC Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Director General Dr. Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera has left for Karachi to present cheque to Mansoor in person.
“We are worried about his health. Mansoor has won 1994 champion trophy and later 1994 World Cup almost single handedly. It was Mansoor who stopped penalty strokes in the semi-finals and final of the champions trophy in Lahore and later showing same guts he won the semi-finals for Pakistan on penalty strokes and later also in the final of world cup against Holland to bring laurels for the country. The two events were the last mega hockey trophies Pakistan had won,” Dr Akhtar Nawaz said.
DG PSB said that the government would take all possible steps to help Mansoor regain his health.
“He is an asset to Pakistan. We would definitely help him the best we could.”
