KPK Colours produced dazzling display to edge out Punjab greens 3-2 in a clash Friday to earn a place in the quarter finals as the national under-18 hockey championship is approaching knockout stages.
Some of the KPK players and one-odd Punjab young guns were so brilliant that their stick work enthralled the sizeable crowd present at the Naseer Bunda Ground.
Surprisingly not a single member of the Pakistan hockey federation (PHF) selection committee headed by Rashid Junior was present on the occasion to watch youngsters in action.
The way right out Khairullah pierced through the Punjab defense on two occasions in third quarter was a treat to watch. His ball-control coupled with his ability to dodge players with share speed was something encouraging for youth hockey.
Another youngster from KPK Ifraz Ahmed who plays as center forward has all the ability to make it to the big time hockey in days to come. Yasir who was playing as a center-half was also seen feeding his forwards well. It was Khairullah who put his team 1-0 up with Ifraz adding another goal in between, Amjad completed the tally for KPK Colours.
For Punjab greens Usman Bashir scored both the goals through penalty corners.
“It would have been better had some of the selection committee members seen league matches. There are Kamran Ashraf and Muhammad Irfan who are watching players in action. We would make sure that all the members of the selection committee would be here by the time the quarter finals stage gets under way,” Shahbaz Ahmed Senior, when questioned, said.
He added that all those who are showing guts and ability to play better hockey at this level would be invited to attend the camp. Earlier, in the opening match of the day, KPK Whites crushed Balochistan Whites III. In the last match of the day Islamabad beat Baloschistan comfortably.
